G. FerringtonHaving completed a B.S. degree in Humanities Studies and Music Composition at Portland State College, I went on to earn a MS degree in Instructional Technology with a minor in cinema at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

I moved to Eugene in 1967 and joined the University of Oregon faculty. I initially taught newer media and film study courses in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts and then moved to the College of Education to teach educational media, instructional systems design, and courses in multimedia production with an emphasis on audio design. I eventually chaired the Instructional Systems Technology Graduate program.

My last three years at the University focused on research and teaching related to Media Literacy and implementing media study programs in elementary and secondary education.

Having retired in 1998, I continue to find life busy. As an acoustic-ecologist I am focused on the study of the soundscape environment with a special interest in education about the field. I am currently secretary for the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) and I edit and publish the WFAE Newsletter and web site. I also serve on the WFAE Editorial Committee for Soundscape: The Journal of Acoustic Ecology.

Until recently I was a member of the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) Board of Directors in Eugene, Oregon. I continue to participate on DIVA's OpenLens Fesival and Teen Video Challenge competition planning committees. I also manage DIVA's web sites and press coverage.

Spare time is spent composing, photographing, drawing, and writing informational articles about media literacy and acoustic-ecology.
